Formerly known as “Discover French”, this program is designed to help kids aged 6-7 get started with Core French by combining an academic and a game-based approach, with a strong emphasis on developing oral skills (speaking and understanding). Sessions take place in a dedicated classroom with specific, age-appropriate materials. Not only do students learn a fair amount of vocabulary on a wide range of themes but they also develop their first second language skills, enabling them to interact in basic, real-life situations.
Each set of lessons focuses on a specific topic (e.g. food, pets) associated with one or several language needs (e.g. describing objects, introducing people, expressing likes and dislikes, etc.) Topics are either based on children’s specific interests or their immediate environment (home, school, stores, etc). New vocabulary is always presented in context (short sentences with a visual support such as flashcards, figurines, gestures) and as an alternative to using the first language to clarify meaning.
At the end of our Introductory Core French program, students are expected to be quite familiar with a number of basic words and sentences, and more importantly, to be able to communicate in basic conversational contexts (introducing oneself, one’s family, describing objects and everyday environments).
