Core French Training

This program offers motivated students aged 7-12 a unique opportunity to develop their conversational skills in French and consolidate their knowledge of the material taught in Core French at school. Instructors are native speakers, fully trained, with a thorough understanding of the communicative approach.

Please note that Core French Training sessions are currently offered in one-on-one or semi-private format only at the Islington location.

Oral Communication

Our primary goal is to help students develop their oral proficiency (listening and speaking skills). Therefore our sessions are 95% oral and put the emphasis on the acquisition of verbs and verbal structures, oral vocabulary building with visual supports (posters, flashcards, etc.), pattern drills or short question-answer interactions (authentic or role-playing). Students gradually train their ears to pronunciation and intonation and learn how respond to simple questions using basic vocabulary, high-frequency verbs and verbal structures.

Our 30-minute sessions are designed to maximize opportunities for every student to speak and communicate in French during the session. We guarantee a low student-teacher ratio of 1:6 in every class and provide quality learning resources designed to trigger and sustain short interactions on a wide range of themes and everyday life situations.

Building bilingual skills

The program also trains students how to build quick connections between English and French to increase their ability to switch from one language to the other in a bilingual perspective. The instructor regularly points out similarities or differences in syntax, morphology, pronunciation and resorts to a variety of ressources to enhance linguistic awareness in both languages (e.g. English/French flashcards): students are gradually taught how to identify and make proper use of “equivalencies” in syntax and thus avoid clumsy word-to-word translation when speaking.

Two levels offered

Our syllabus aligns to the Ontario curriculum from Grade 4 to 8 and deals with themes and topics relevant to students’ interests and level of maturity. Our program is currently offered at 2 levels.

CFT-1 (Gr.3-4)

  • suitable for full beginners (from Grade 3) or students with a limited knowledge of French (up to Grade 5)
  • follows a thematic approach: sessions focus on a basic theme and vocabulary is practiced using word-image flashcards
  • vocabulary words are always practiced in context: e.g. with the word "chien" - "Qu'est-ce que c'est? - C'est un chien."
  • vocabulary units are associated with a basic language function (e.g. the theme of “colours” is coupled with the function “asking about/stating one’s favourite colour”).

CFT-2 (Gr.5-7)

  • suitable for Grade 5-7 students
  • students have a fairly good knowledge of basic vocabulary and oral structures on a variety of topics and can comprehend and respond to basic questions in very simple situations (school environment, personal preferences, family and relatives, everyday routine, etc.)
  • puts the emphasis on language functions or language needs (e.g. expressing a will, a need, a preference, inquiring about direction, giving advice, etc.) as opposed to a purely thematic approach
  • activities include more elaborated interactions based on more complex communicative scenarios, simulations and role-playing, as students gradually gain increased autonomy and confidence with their oral skills

Student involvement & responsibilities

To a large extent the success of our program depends a lot on students' motivation and willingness to develop their oral skills in French. Therefore all participants are required to comply with basic guidelines for the sessions to be as effective as possible.

  • students who are mature enough to understand the benefits of coming to class once to several times a week
  • They understand and accept the class format and basic rules of behaviour during the language class
  • learning goals are stated clearly at the start of each session (e.g. “today we will review/practice how to express likes and dislikes...” or “at the end of this class, you should be able to inquire and answer about...”) so student can also measure their progress
  • students are invited to interact as much as possible as directed by the instructor during the 30-minute conversation class period. They are willing to take risks and accept that making errors communicative activities is a natural part of the learning process
  • students are required to complete the follow-up work handed out after each session in a timely fashion. Using online audio resources are also highly recommended (yet not required) as they help students consolidate their knowledge of the material taught in class
